Virtual Reality (VR) Technology in Evaluating Students’ Perception and Preference of Classroom Indoor Environment

Introduction

Our research focuses on students' perception of the indoor environment of classrooms. We have conducted a survey (featured in the following video) among university students in PolyU and identified their perceived importance of different indoor environment attributes (including both architectural attributes and building service attributes). Lighting comfort and acoustic comfort are ranked on top of the list as the most concerned indoor environment attributes by our students. Based on the selected attributes, we adopted VR technologies and developed a 3D model of classroom environment based on a real classroom in PolyU. 30 different VR scenarios with different indoor environment settings were developed. 54 participants have participated in the research and given their feedbacks on a voluntary basis. An animation video was developed and embedded in the virtual environment for participants to understand indoor environment attributes.
